Fine Arts and Athletics

Concert Band, Vocal Choirs, Private Lessons, Piano Pedagogy

Arts instruction at HCS begins early; rhythm instruments in kindergarten, choral/theory training in all elementary grades, speech and piano lessons beginning in first grade, band instruments in fourth, and hand bells in sixth. Performance opportunities range from major winter and spring concerts to recitals, band concerts, competitions and weekly chapels. HCS is a perennial first-place winner in the Maryland Association of Christian Schools state fine arts competition, as the school trophy cases attest.

Staged Musical and Drama Production

Dramatic  production is one of the most exciting opportunities at Harford Christian School.  Each spring high school students who make up the “HCS Players” have performed popular full-length classic productions, such as Father Knows Best, Cheaper by the Dozen, Emma, Meet Me in St. Louis,  David Copperfield, Sense and Sensibility, Edelweiss, Annie of Green Gables and Sarah Plain and Tall, employing full staging and period costumes.  Students participate in every aspect of the production, including costumes, set construction, and make-up.

“Athletes first; winning second,” is the theme in all Harford Christian School athletics because our ultimate goal is to develop Christian character in young people.

A solid work ethic, poise in adversity and personal confidence are traits learned on athletic fields. At Harford Christian School, those tools are merely a means to an end: to serve Christ. That is what sets us apart.

The championship banners and trophies that line the lobby and gymnasium are impressive. As early as the fifth grade, HCS students have the opportunity to participate in athletics. And from the very beginning they are taught the greatest lesson of life: do all to the glory of God.

Art Instruction

Harford Christian offers instruction beginning with the fundamentals of art, building up to the development of skills for students who are serious about developing their artistic talents.

Art I focuses on the seven elements of art, as well as basic drawing. Other units include calligraphy, acrylic painting, clay, watercolor, and printmaking. As well as learning basic techniques of various mediums, we also learn about the Masters in a featured Artist of the Month. Art I will lay a good foundation for future art classes as students discover and uncover their talents.

Art II expands upon skills learned in Art I.  Advanced Art is for students who have completed Art I and Art II and who desire to seriously develop their artistic talents. This course will highlight the Elements of Art and Principles of Design as it relates to their personal artwork.

Agriculture, Programming, Introduction to Engineering

HCS is excited to offer programs that are not usually available in private schools of our size.  Our students are enjoying the opportunity to learn career-enhancing skill in high school, taught by professionals in those fields.
